Minors

SoMAS offers minors in CLI, COS, EDP, EHI, EHM, ENS, GSS, MAR, and SUS. Descriptions for each minor are available below.

Generally, courses completed as part of aminor may not be applied to any major or other minor within the Sustainability Studies Program or the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. Students should declare their minor no later than the middle of their sophom*ore year.

Education

Minor in Climate Solutions

The Climate Solutions Minor is intended to provide a coherent foundational knowledge about climate change and skills to work on mitigation and adaptation solutions.

Minor in Coastal Environmental Studies

The Coastal Environmental Studies minor is intended for students who seek to complement their chosen major with a foundation in physical sciences, natural sciences,and physical geography, combined with an understanding of environmental ethics, environmental policy, and environmental law.

Minor in Ecosystems and Human Impact

The Ecosystems and Human Impact minor is intended for students who seek to complement their chosen major with a coherent set of courses emphasizing the interaction between humans and ecosystems from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Minor in Environmental Design, Policy and Planning

The Environmental Design, Policy, and Planning minor is intended for students who seek to complement their chosen major with a foundation in complex scientific, legal, ethical, political, environmental, and socio-economic issues that surround the development, management, and use of the built environment.

Minor in Environmental Humanities

The Environmental Studies minor is offered to all students interested in adding an Environmental focus to their studies. Students in the natural or social sciences learn about both scientific and social issues important to solving environmental problems. Completion of the minor requires 18 credits including 3 credits of research or internship. The Environmental Humanities minor is intended for students who seek to complement their chosen major with a foundation in the humanistic aspects of environmental studies and develop skills in one of Environmental Humanities core areas of study.

The Environmental Studies minor is offered to all students interested in adding an Environmental focus to their studies. Students in the natural or social sciences learn about both scientific and social issues important to solving environmental problems.

Minor in Geospatial Science

Geospatial Science is used in a wide range of disciplines as a research tool, a decision-making tool, data analysis tool, and/or as a planning tool. One of the major tools used in these analyses is Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software.

Minor in Marine Sciences

The minor in Marine Sciences is open to students who either wish to prepare themselves for future graduate education in marine sciences or who are preparing for a career in a marine-related field. The minor provides a foundation in marine aspects of biology, chemistry, geology, and physics for the undergraduate.
